The purpose of the Catalog

The Catalog is the tool to:

  • Perform batch validation of collections of EDM records.
  • Learn and better understand the EDM ARMA Specification.

Also, the Catalog is a sandbox to prepare for the mediation of the EDM and IIIF features for the CHI’s willing to contribute to Europeana via Manuscriptorium.

Batch validation

The Catalog allows for a large-scale batch validation when the collections of EDM records need final verification.

The Catalog can ingest the records from a CHI’s repository via standard means (including but not limited to regular OAI-PMH harvesting), validate the content and publish the content so that the CHI representatives can search and filter out their own records - the valid ones or the with warnings and/or errors issued.

The Catalog provides tool to search the content and filter out records with errors and focus on finetuning some otherwise hidden issues.

Learn to understand the ARMA Specs

Anyone can browse the Catalog and therefore it is possible for any CHI representatives considering to enrich their content with ARMA necessary, ARMA recommended or ARMA nice-to-have information to learn from the practices of others.

The user can search similar records from other repositories and browse the ARMA valid records as an example.

Mapping of records to EDM ARMA Specs

The Catalogue also intermediate the mapping of a local CHI’s non-EDM records to EDM and also to mediate the IIIF features. Contact us if you want to find out more on this topic.

How to use the Catalog

To open the Catalog, go to http://staging.arma.manuscriptorium.com, click the upper left navigation icon and select the Catalog app in the menu.

Search records

On the first tab there are some predefined queries. Click the Search tab instead.

On the left there is the fulltext search box. You can either search for any word in the Words Anywhere fields or choose a specific property. Enter the query text into the Query line.

If you don’t want to search for specific words just leave the Query line empty and just hit the search button.

Once you perform a search there will be some search results on the left. These can be further filtered via the filters section.

  • Select valid in the EDM Valid section.
  • Click the button below filters.

You can navigate between the record details and search form via the main tabs in the top.

Catalog navigation

The record detail displays the XML itself and provides detailed information on the validation results, the class properties suggestions and a manifest based preview of the document.

The tab Validation provides the summary of issues found in the records (if any) classified acordingly to the ARMA specification into the following sections:

  • Validation against XSD
  • Essential schema compliance
  • ARMA necessary
  • ARMA strongly recommended
  • ARMA nice to have

If there are any errors (red triangle) or warnings (orange bubble) in a particular section, you can click the section name and see additional information. The ARMA Sandbox not only reports the issue but also provides all the available information on the proper use of that particular property.

Validation overview

The ProvidedCHO, WebResource, Aggregation and Service tabs provide additional information on the usage of the properties in each available EDM class (contains suggestions of important and less important properties possibly missing in the particular class).

Class overview

The XML tab simly displays the EDM XML record itself so that it can be reviewed.

XML structure

The Facsimile (IIIF) tab (under development!!) tries to load the manifest as specified in the EDM XML and displays the digital facsimile preview.
